Milestone: Happy Birthday, Hip-Hop!
It all started back in 1973, in an apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx.
During a back to school party for local kids, DJ Kool Herc debuted a new type of music; one that featured scratching, sampling, and rhyming over a dance beat. Before too long, the new style became popular not just in New York, but in cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, and even St. Louis.
Today, hip-hop is an international phenomenon, and a vital part of culture worldwide. Indeed, it is a beat and art form that simply cannot be stopped.
Radio Free Connecticut salutes the pioneers of hip-hop, and congratulates them on fifty years of "gettin' down".
Station News
You may be aware that a new radio station is rumored to be starting up soon. A group in New Haven is waiting on final official approval for an FCC license, which is said to be "imminent".
If the station is granted permission to begin broadcasts, its large signal coverage area will pose a bit of an issue.
You see, our frequency of 102.1 FM is the same frequency that the new station plans to transmit on. As we do not wish to interfere with other broadcasts, this may force Radio Free Connecticut to move up or down the dial in the near future.
Radio Free Connecticut is closely watching developments regarding the proposed station. We'll let you know if a frequency change is in the cards.
